In November 1992, a new road opened along
Tinnsjø lake, from Gransherad to Mæl in
Tinn district. The road is 35 km in length,
with some sections in tunnel.
The Gaustatoppen Mountain RoadThe Gaustatoppen Mountain Road is the name given to the memorable drive from Sauland to Rjukan. This is an alternative route for drivers and their passengers who wish to experience the beauty of nature, local traditions and spectacular scenery. In Tuddal, you can get a taste of genuine local culture in Knut Buens workshop. If you make a detour from Tuddal village to Bondal, you can see an agricultural landscape with farms dating back to the Middle Ages. Tuddal Høyfjellshotell is a mountain lodge built 1895 in the distinctive Swiss chalet style.
The road continues to its highest point, Flistjønn-skaret at 1,260 metres above sea level, one of the highest mountain passes in Northern Europe. From Stavsro, a waymarked trail leads to the summit of Gaustatoppen.
There is also an information board here, and a summer café. The hike up to Gaustatoppen takes around two hours. Inside the mountain is the Gaustabanen funicular railway, 1,030 metres long with a gradient of 39 degrees. The funicular is open to the public on selected days.
About 2 km further on, you reach a junction with the road leading to Gaustaområdet, a large-scale development of holiday homes.
Gaustablikk ski centre is a hive of activity in winter. Via a series of hairpin bends, you descend into the valley at Dale church, built 1775 on the site of a stave church first recorded in 1401.
